High-density lipoproteins were obtained by precipitation from plasma of rats fed a control or an ethanol (36% EDC) liquid diet for 8 weeks and tested for cholesterol efflux with macrophages, as described in the Methods section. Percentage of efflux was calculated as the proportion of [3H]cholesteryl oleate loaded in the macrophages that was released in the medium after a 24-hour incubation with FCS-free medium containing HDL.
