Effect of La3+ on the Al3+-activated anion current. Current–voltage curves were measured in whole-cell membranes in the treatments shown (in sequence). All external solutions contained 15 mM KCl and 0.5 mM CaCl2, pH 4.2 (control, ▪) with the following additions: ⧫, 50 μM AlCl3; ▵, 50 μM LaCl3; and ▪, 50 μM AlCl3 plus 50 μM LaCl3. Pipette solution (mM): 70 KCl, 2.3 CaCl2, 10 EGTA, 10 Hepes, 2 MgCl2, 2 K2ATP, and 35 KOH to pH 7.2.
