Relationship of fiber growth properties to pressure in S100 diluted 1:4 with KPM buffer. (a) Effect of pressure on the rate of fiber growth. Each point represents the mean of three trials, each of which included measurement of ⩾10 fibers for 45 s or more of growth. (b) Variation in optical density at the growing end of fibers with pressure. Normalized optical density was determined by measuring the grayscale value of a fiber, subtracting the background, and normalizing to the value obtained for a fiber grown in the same batch of S100 at 1 atm. Points represent the mean of three trials, each including measurements from ⩾12 fibers. The bars in a and b are standard errors of the mean. (c) Data in a and b replotted to show the relationship of growth rate to optical density. Growth rates were normalized to the mean rate at 1 atm.
