Early and late replicating chromatin distribute in distinct compartments in the nuclei of CCL-39 cells. After synchronous release into S phase, cells were pulse labelled with BrdU immediately before harvesting at hourly intervals. BrdU-DNA was visualized by indirect immunofluorescence. A–E show optical sections through nuclei considered representative of each of the five replication patterns detected (A, pattern 1–E, pattern 5).
