(A) Thin section through a bristle of a mutant that contains only one copy of the forked gene (forked^36a/+) but wild-type with respect to the singed gene. Seven actin filament bundles are associated with the limiting plasma membrane (arrows). (B) Two actin bundles present in A are enlarged so that the packing of the actin filaments in the bundles is obvious. The filaments are clearly not hexagonally packed but there are regions indicated by the arrows in which the filaments are closely packed or appear in linear rows.
