Induction of apoptotic morphology in HeLa nuclei by bacterially expressed CAD: analysis by electron microscopy. Nuclei treated with CAD—as shown in Fig. 6 B, lane and panel 6— were embedded in plastic, thin sectioned, and examined in the electron microscope. Regions of condensed chromatin are seen to abut the nuclear envelope, and often protrude as though beginning to bud outwards through the envelope. These images are indistinguishable from previously published images of nuclei treated with complete apoptotic extract (Lazebnik et al., 1993). Bar, 1 μm.
