The number of proneural sites in D. melanogaster that conform to the consensus sequence for Ac/Sc binding, GCAGSTG where S is C or G (Singson et al. 1994), and to the consensus sequence for Atonal binding, AWCAKGTG where W is A or T and K is G or T (Powell et al. 2004), are displayed in italics. The numbers of the D. melanogaster sites that are conserved for each of eight other Drosophila species were determined from BLAT readouts and were checked with individual sequences for each species. Non-italic numbers correspond to the quantity of D. melanogaster sites conserved in each species and dashes represent the lack of sites. Sites that conform perfectly to the consensus are designated c and sites that vary from the consensus at one base are designated pc for partial consensus. Consensus sequences that vary between species, but still maintain conformation to the consensus site are included in the rows designated “c.” m1 and HLHm3 do not have proneural sites and thus are omitted.

a

D. melanogaster sites conserved in all nine other species analyzed.

b

Publicly available D. simulans m2 sequence data are incomplete and thus are not included in this analysis.

c

Sites in m2 and mδ identified as proneural by (Nellesen et al. 1999) according to the consensus RCAGSTG do not fit the Atonal or Ac/Sc consensus and are represented as partial consensus sites.
