The numbers of bHLH repressor sites identified in D. melanogaster are displayed in italics. N, N box, CACNAG (Oellers et al. 1994); EB, class B E box, CACGTG (Dang et al. 1992); EC, Hairy site/class C E box, CACGCG (Rebeiz et al. 2005). The numbers of D. melanogaster sites that are conserved in each of eight other Drosophila species were identified in BLAT readouts and individual species sequence data. Non-italic numbers correspond to the quantity of D. melanogaster sites conserved in each species and dashes represent the lack of sites.

a

The number of D. melanogaster sites conserved in all nine other species analyzed.

b

Contains two modified bases.

c

Contains one modified base.

d

Publicly available D. simulans m2 sequence data are incomplete and thus are not included in this analysis.
