Schematic representation of the principal brain regions comprising the neurocognitive architecture described in text. In the alternative evolutionary model we propose, basal ganglial circuitries, in correspondence with the life history regulatory system, support the developmental construction, and subsequent experiential modification of cortical representational networks. The neural correlates of cognitive and behavioral processes are activation patterns in specific representational networks.
