^aVaccinated mice were protected from toxic shock following i.p. challenge with SEB. Groups of 10 BALB/c mice were immunized (on days 0, 21, and 42) by i.m. injection or i.n. instillation. Two weeks after the final dose, the mice were challenged i.p. with 20 LD₅₀ of wild-type SEB, followed 4 h later by 40 μg of E. coli 055:B5 LPS to potentiate the response. The animals were observed for 72 h following challenge, and the numbers of survivors were recorded.
