Table 1.
Endocrine cell distribution in Arx mutant mice
|

---|---|---|---|
Hormone-producing cells | Wild-type, Arx heterozygotes | Arx hemizygotes | Percent difference |
Insulin | 307 ± 35 (61%) | 404 ± 23 (74%) | +31 |
Glucagon | 143 ± 26 (28%) | 0 | — |
Somatostatin | 44 ± 14 (9%) | 135 ± 28 (25%) | +207 |
Pancreatic polypeptide | 9 ± 4 (2%) | 8 ± 3 (1%) | ∼0 |
Total cells | 503 ± 79 | 547 ± 54 | ∼0 |
Endocrine cells were counted from immunostained sections of 2-day-old pancreas estimated to be the same size. Data are shown as the mean number ± S.E. of the mean (S.E.M.) of hormone-positive cells per section (every tenth section) from at least three independent pancreata. Percentages in brackets indicate the contribution of a particular endocrine cell-subtype to the total islet cell population. Hemizygous Arx pancreas lacks α cells, whereas β- and δ-cell content are increased 1.31- and 2.07-fold, respectively. Importantly, the total endocrine cell number is unchanged following Arx distribution
