R1.1: region 1.1 can modulate or prevent DNA binding by regions 2 and 4 when the sigma is unbound by the core RNA polymerase; R2: region 2 contains both the -10 promoter recognition helix and the primary core RNA polymerase binding domain. R3: region 3 is primarily involved in binding to the core RNA polymerase. R4: region 4 is involved in binding to the -35 promoter region.
