Cytokine mRNA expression by freshly isolated CD8⁺ cells from normal LNs and influenza virus–infected lung. RNA was prepared from multiple samples of 500 cells of (A) normal LN^low cells, (B) influenza lung^low cells, and (C) influenza lung^high cells immediately after purification by FACS^® and analyzed for CD3∈ and cytokine mRNA by RT-PCR. Data are shown for all samples that yielded a CD3∈ PCR product (89 of 90 samples) and pooled from at least two experiments (six samples per experiment).
