Axonal diameters were calculated from the axonal areas measured in the dorsal and ventral roots shown in Fig. 1. In ventral roots, all myelinated axons contained in the root were measured. Values for dorsal roots were obtained by randomly sampling at least 300 myelinated axons in each root as described in Materials and Methods. Values are presented ± SD.
