Cells in quadruplicate wells in a 96-well plate were lysed 120 hr after drug addition, and the activity of the cytoplasmic enzyme lactate dehydrogenase released from the cells was detected by using a colorimetric assay. The intensity of the red color correlates with the number of cells in the well.
