Abstract

Many specialized systems to support distinct hospital areas are currently available in off-the-shelf products. Commonly, hospital administrators have decided to select systems to best satisfy the needs of individual hospital areas and have deferred the problem of integrating these systems. Thus, there currently exists a need for a systems analysis methodology that can be used by various institutions to integrate existing and future systems into a decentralized hospital information system (HIS).

This paper presents a systems analysis methodology that is independent of the specifics of an institution and which produces a siteindependent model for a general HIS. The methodology is limited to an analysis of the applications layer of the decentralized system, but it also considers the need to minimize the requirements imposed on communications layers.
