Different phases formed by the C16EO6/water system. On heating from the hexagonal phase with two-dimensional (2D) periodicity (a) to lamellar structures with one-dimensional periodicity (c), this system proceeds via an Ia3d cubic structure with three-dimensional periodicity (b), whereas upon cooling from the lamellar phase (c) it proceeds via a rhombohedral phase (d).
