Model for FtsZ ring formation. Polymerization is initiated by nucleation of FtsZ monomers forming a short and highly unstable polymer. These short polymers can disassemble rapidly back to monomer or extend to form the longer polymers that constitute the FtsZ ring. In this model, the Min proteins inhibit nucleation of FtsZ, perhaps by competing directly with the monomers for the nucleation sites. EzrA destabilizes already polymerized FtsZ.
