Astrocytes preincubated in a Cl⁻-free solution still alkalinize when exposed to CO₂/HCO₃ ⁻. Before the start of the experiment, the astrocyte was incubated for 30 min in a Cl⁻-free, HEPES-buffered solution containing 1 mM of the GABA_A-agonist isoguvacine. During the experiment, 5% CO₂/17 mM HCO₃ ⁻ was applied and removed three times in the continued absence of external Cl⁻.
