Rabbit aortic calcification occurred in the lower zone of thickened plaques adjacent to the media. The normal control contained neither thickened intima nor calcification in the media (not shown) [see Refs 7, 19]. Rabbits were fed an atherogenic diet containing 0.5% cholesterol and 2% peanut oil for 4 months. Segments of thoracic aortas were fixed with formalin, paraffin blocked, thin sectioned.
