FIG. 3.

Temporal development of histological lesions in the ipsilateral sciatic nerve. Lesions were not observed in sections of sciatic nerve obtained at 1 to 3 days p.i. from HVP2nv-infected mice (A) (3 days p.i.). The first lesions appeared at 5 days p.i. and were characterized by mild mononuclear inflammatory infiltrates usually confined to perivascular locations (B) (arrows). By 9 days p.i., the inflammatory infiltrates were more conspicuous and accompanied by evidence of axonal degeneration (C) (arrows). Lesions were not seen at any time point following inoculation with HVP2ap (D) (9 days p.i.). All sections were H&E stained. Bar for panels A, B, and D = 120 μm; bar for panel C = 60 μm.
