Shown as well is the possible involvement of nitric oxide synthase and nitric oxide, such as the nitrosylation of metallothionein-3 and creatine kinase. For metallothionein-3, nitrosylation has been shown to cause the loss of Zn²⁺ from the protein. Loss of Cu⁺ may also result from nitrosylation, but this has not been established.
