Iron accumulation in the wild-type strain and the ferritin-deficient mutants of E. chrysanthemi. Bacteria were grown overnight in L broth with 10 μM (A) or 50 μM (B) FeSO₄. Cells were harvested on filters and washed as described in Materials and Methods. The amounts of ⁵⁵Fe taken up by cells of the wild-type (WT) strain and the different ferritin-deficient mutants are indicated in picomoles of iron per OD₆₀₀ unit. Experiments were performed in triplicate, and standard deviations are shown.
