Germination and outgrowth of spores of different strains. Dormant spores of the wild-type (•) and nfo exoA (▪) strains (A and B), α⁻β⁻ (•) and α⁻β⁻ nfo exoA (▪) strains (C and D), uvrA (•) and uvrA nfo exoA (▪) strains (E and F), and recA (•) and recA nfo exoA (▪) strains (G and H) were heat shocked and germinated without (A, C, E, and G) or with (B, D, F, and H) 0.2 mM H₂O₂ added ∼15 min after the start of germination, and spore germination and outgrowth were measured by monitoring the OD₆₀₀ of the cultures as described in Materials and Methods. The results are representative, and the experiment was performed at least three times with different lots of spores, all of which produced similar results. WT, wild type.
