The inner core is not affected by wapR and migA knockouts, but the migA knockout strain does not react with outer core-specific MAb 5C101. The wapR knockout strain and the complemented migA strain lack the core-plus-one O-antigen repeat. The wapR mutant does not react with A- and B-band-specific MAbs and does not show a characteristic lipid A-linked LPS banding pattern. Providing wapR in trans restores the wapR mutant to the wild-type phenotype.
