Blocking NMDA receptor activity does not affect the SP-like immunoreactivity of tectal cells. Animals had Elvax containing either d-AP-5 (A) or its biologically inactive isomer l-AP-5 (C) implanted over one tectal lobe and nothing put over the other one (B and D). No difference is evident in the number of SP-IR cells in layer 6 with either of these treatments. All photographs were taken in the central middle tectal regions, which were covered by Elvax in the Elvax-containing tectum.
