Purity of APC populations. Total spleen cells were first sorted in a CD11c⁺ (the DC) and a CD11c^– fraction (see Materials and methods). The CD11c^– cells were further divided into a CD11b⁺-fraction (macrophages) and a GAM⁺-fraction (B cells). The purified cell populations contained 92·2 ± 3·0% CD11c⁺ cells (DC), 98·9 ± 0·3% CD11c^– GAM⁺ cells (B cells), and 85·3 ± 2·6% CD11c^– CD11b⁺ cells (macrophages).
