Some of the pathways proposed to be involved in cell death and cell survival following an acute cerebral ischaemia. This figure is simplified and illustrates only some of the pathways. Some pathways can initiate cell death or cell survival depending on the time after the onset of ischaemia and the severity of the ischaemia. There is also a lack of agreement among investigators as to the specific role of some of these signalling systems and the figure is used here merely to illustrate possible targets for pharmacological intervention.
