Reconciling orthologous intron–exon structures to improve gene predictions. (A) Clear protein similarity between the MAL7P1.99 and PY05856 genes of P. falciparum and P. yoelii continues through two conserved intron positions, and then ends abruptly at a predicted P. yoelii-specific intron. (B) Alignment of the genes at the DNA level shows strong sequence similarity between the predicted P. yoelii intron and the predicted P. falciparum coding sequence, strongly suggesting that the predicted P. yoelli intron instead is coding.
