Lytic viral replication is necessary to augment the fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)–induced fibrotic response. Wild-type mice were given FITC intratracheally on Day 0. On Day 14, FITC-treated mice received 5 × 104 pfu murine gammaherpesvirus-68 (γHV68) (solid bar) or ultraviolet (UV)-inactivated γHV68 (stippled bar) intranasally. Lungs were harvested for collagen determination on Day 21. Infection with the UV-inactivated virus does not exacerbate FITC-induced fibrosis. Data represent n = 5–7 mice per group.
