Differences in the time the infants spent in active sleep during the 3.5-hour testing session when their mothers smoked as compared with the time spent in active sleep when their mothers abstained from smoking. The 15 infants were rank-ordered according to the amplitudes of their responses. The mean difference was −37.6% ± 8.4% (P = .002).
