NHE3 inhibition by EIPA (100 μmol l⁻¹) reduced the rate of initial internalisation dramatically. H⁺-ATPase inhibition by bafilomycin A₁ (1 μmol l⁻¹) affected internalisation only after a delay period. A second NHE inhibitor with lower affinity for NHE3, HOE694 (100 μmol l⁻¹), affected internalisation to a lesser extent as compared to EIPA. This is in good agreement with the less pronounced effect on endocytosis. n = 6. *P < 0.05vs. control.
