Summary of subcellular Ca 2+ alternans characteristics

Subcellular Ca2+ alternans Number of cells ARcontrol ARmaximum ΔARgradient
All forms 29 0.05 ± 0.01 0.65 ± 0.03
Gradients 20 0.04 ± 0.01 0.64 ± 0.03 0.37 ± 0.03
Out-of-phase 12 0.05 ± 0.02 0.62 ± 0.03
Homogeneous 8 0.07 ± 0.04 0.68 ± 0.09

Ca2+ alternans was induced by pacing (15 cells) or by exposure to pyruvate (14 cells). AR, alternans ratio. AR control, ratio of amplitude of two successive [Ca2+]i transients before induction of alternans. ARmaximum, maximum subcellular AR. ΔARgradient, difference of the AR between the subcellular regions displaying the highest and the lowest degree of Ca2+ alternans. Data represent means ± s.e.m.
