(b) The task is to require recognition of either (i) a conspecific or (ii) a food item using distinct output neurons, but not to respond to a stimulus consisting of only (iii) background illumination. (c) A hypothetical distribution of reflected light from targets and background, posing the neural network task in terms of sensory ecology. Note that the coding of colour is not specified, and represents a non-trivial attribute of this model.
