Minimal inhibitory concentrations of ampicillin (MIC) are in μg/mL and were determined using liquid cultures. Effective level of mutation (m) is the minimum number of mutations required to convert a chimera into one of its parents at only those residues recognized by SCHEMA, that is, residues whose coordinates are defined in the TEM-1 structure (Jelsch et al. 1993).
