Dashed arrows depict the normal effects of ionising radiation. Dotted arrows show HIF-1-mediated pathways that sensitise tumours to radiation. Solid arrows show HIF-1-mediated pathways that protect tumours from radiation, whose blockade might radiosensitise tumours. ‘VEGF’ symbolises the proangiogenic pathway, ‘p21’ the mitotic pathway, ‘p-p53’ the apoptotic pathway, and ‘ATP’ the metabolic pathway.
