Lewis lung carcinoma cells were cultured in the presence of darbepoetin (10–1000 ng ml⁻¹) under aerobic or hypoxic (1% O₂) growth conditions, and proliferation was assessed after 48 h using the MTT assay. Hypoxic conditions significantly reduce LLC cell proliferation (^*P<0.05 vs normoxic control). Data are expressed as a percentage of aerobic control (% means±s.e.m.) and represent three independent MTT experiments. Statistical analysis was performed by one-way ANOVA with LSD post hoc correction.
