Complexion of the FMN cofactor by hydrophobic residues. Most so-far crystallized flavodoxins have a tyrosine at the si-face of the isoalloxazine ring, and a tryptophan residue at the re-face, as for example (B) the Anabaena flavodoxin. (A) In the Helicobacter pylori protein, Tyr92 is found at the si-face of the isoalloxazine ring, and an alanine residue at the re-face. (C) The Clostridium beijerinckii flavodoxin has an unusual structure in regard that Met56 is found at the si-face.
