Competing folding and inclusion body pathways of the P22 tailspike protein. Previously characterized mutants affected the partially folded monomer and its partitioning to the inclusion body pathway ( King et al. 1996; Seckler 1998). The mutants described in this work interfere with later steps. Alhough the protrimer intermediate is shown with the β-helices docked as in the native structure, the organization of its β-helices is unclear. The ribosome-bound state of the tailspike chains is described in Clark and King (2001) and the off-pathway intermediates in Speed et al. (1996, 1997).
