Table 2.

Elongation of muscle, tendon and fascicles during a standard stretch from 0 to 25 deg, pre- and post-conditioning

0–25 deg Pre-conditioning Post-conditioning
MTU elongation (cm) 1.98 ± 0.03 1.98 ± 0.03
MTJ elongation (cm) 0.92 ± 0.06 1.16 ± 0.05*
Tendon elongation (cm) 1.06 ± 0.04 0.82 ± 0.05*
Fascicle elongation (cm) 0.97 ± 0.08 0.98 ± 0.05

Data shown include: distal muscle and tendon displacements (elongation) pre- and post-conditioning stretches. Gastrocnemius medialis muscle–tendon unit (MTU) elongation was calculated from changes in angle at the ankle; myotendinous junction (MTJ) movement detected by ultrasonography and tendon extension determined by subtracting MTJ movement from that of the MTU. Values are also given for change in muscle fascicle lengths.

*

Significant difference from pre-conditioning (P < 0.05).

Significant difference from tendon elongation (P < 0.05).
