p53-independent antiproliferative and cytotoxic effect of rML. E1A/ras-transformed p53-wild-type (A) and p53-deficient (B) MEFs were treated with increasing concentrations of rML and proliferative activity was determined at the indicated timepoints with the alamar blue assay. (C) The cytotoxic effect was determined by PI exclusion 24 h after treatment with increasing concentrations of rML. The small amount of dead cells in p53-wild-type cells in the absence of treatment might be due to an increased rate of apoptosis induced by the short incubation time with low serum concentration (see Materials and Methods).
