Values for incorporation of AZT into DNA (molecules of AZT/106 nucleotides) are shown as bars for 12 NHMEC strains able to incorporate AZT into DNA after 24 h of exposure to 200 μM AZT. The 7 strains with undetectable levels of AZT-DNA incorporation at 24 h are: M98014, M98016, M98026, M98030, M98040, M99003 and M99015. DNA samples obtained from 2 separate cell exposures were each assayed 3 times by AZT-RIA, and values shown are mean ± range for n=2. The strains chosen for further analysis were: M99005, M98018, designated H1 and H2, respectively; and M98016 and M98040 designated L1 and L2, respectively.
