The BrdU-positive cells in both SVZ (B and E) and SGZ (D and F) of the irradiated rats (n = 8) were significantly fewer than those (SVZ, A and E; SGZ, C and F) of control (sham-irradiated) rats (n = 8). Data are given as means±SEM. ***p<0.001 as compared with controls. (G) The total numbers of granule cells in the dentate gyrus in irradiated rats (n = 6) and control (sham-irradiated) rats (n = 6) were not different.
