Figure 1

Side view of the apparatus. The dark portions of the trays inside the apparatus indicate holes, when the trays are simultaneously extended from opposite sides of the apparatus the holes line up and the reward(s) fall to the floor of the apparatus. Part (a) illustrates the apparatus used in experiments 1 and 2. In experiment 2 only one side of the apparatus was baited per session. Part (b) illustrates the apparatus used in experiment 3. The trays contain only one hole each, and a single reward is placed within the clear cylinder equidistant from both sides of the apparatus upon baiting. Part (c) illustrates the apparatus used in experiment 4. Only one side of the apparatus was baited for the duration of the experiment, and the chute inside the apparatus delivered the reward across from the individual on the baited side.
