Table 4.

Glial cell responses to ATP ejection

ATP concentration (μm) Number of trials Fraction of trials evoking response
Astrocyte Ca2+response Müller cell Ca2+response Intercellular Ca2+ wave
0.1 9 0 0 0
0.3 10 0 0 0
1 19 0.74 0.84 0
3 20 1 1 1
10 10 1 1 1

ATP in Ringer's solution was pressure-ejected from a pipette onto the surface of the retina. Data are expressed as the fraction of trials that evoked a positive response: a Ca2+ increase within astrocytes (third column), a Ca2+ increase within Müller cells (fourth column), or a propagated intercellular Ca2+ wave (fifth column).
