Effect of retinoids and PPARγ agonists on breast cancer cell growth. MCF-7 cells were grown over a 3-day period: (A) in the presence or absence of 4HPR, 5 μM; TGZ, 5 μM; or ATRA, 5 μM or (B) in the presence or absence of 4HPR; TGZ, 5 μM; or 15d-PGJ₂), 5 μM. Cell nuclei were harvested and counted as described (see Materials and Methods). (A) ^*P<0.02 for inhibition vs control; ^**P<0.02 for reversal of 4HPR-induced growth inhibition by TGZ. (B) ^*P<0.01 for inhibition vs control values in the absence of 4HPR; ^**P<0.02 for reversal of 4HPR-induced inhibition by TGZ.
