In situ hybridization of the SOL1 mRNA in the mandibular glands at the bases of the mandibles in soldiers. Frozen sections (10 μm) of the head of the soldier termite were subjected to in situ hybridization with antisense (a and c) and sense (b and d) DIG-labeled RNA probes. The probes were then detected with peroxidase-conjugated anti-DIG Ab. The mandibular glands, which are stained in purple, are indicated by an arrowhead (a and b). (c and d) Magnified photos of the mandibular glands shown in a and b, respectively. The yellow ducts of the mandibular glands were seen in the center of the glands.
