Cumulative frequency of males that were territorial for at least 1 week over the course of the experiments. In both conditions, almost two-thirds of the male population became territorial for at least 1 week and thus had a chance to reproduce (fluctuating habitat, 59.2%, n = 49; stable habitat, 65.2%, n = 23; not significant with χ² test). Linear regression analysis yields y = 2.10x + 23.43 (r² = 0.91; P < 0.0001) for the fluctuating condition, and y = 1.89x + 28.68 (r² = 0.85; P < 0.0001) for the stable condition.
