Glial glutamate transporter expression is increased in the hippocampus of diabetic rats subjected to acute stress. Radioimmunocytochemistry revealed that diabetic rats subjected to acute (i.e. 7 day) stress exhibit region-specific increases in GLT-1 protein expression in the CA3 region of the hippocampus. Since chronic stress increases GLT-1 expression in the CA3 region of the rat hippocampus that are associated with increases in basal glutamatergic tone, these results suggest that basal glutamatergic tone may also be elevated in diabetic rats subjected to stress.
