Proposed catalytic mechanism for steroid double bond reduction. The 4-pro-(R)-hydride transfer from the re-face of NADPH to C-5 of the Δ4-ene is proposed while the C-3 carbonyl is polarized by both Tyr58 and Glu120, which create a superacidic oxyanion hole as predicted by Jez and Penning (34).
